Major Florida Insurer Accused of “Doctoring” Field Adjuster Reports

Legal14

Property insurance companies in Florida are supposed to be trustworthy organizations. However, these companies often face lawsuits and allegations regarding misconduct, including outright lies and fraud. A recent case involves a major insurer in Florida that allegedly “doctored” field adjuster reports. What if you believe that your property insurance lawyer engaged in similar misconduct? Can a property insurance lawyer in Fort Lauderdale help?

60 Minutes Draws Attention to Allegations of Field Adjuster Report Fraud

In January of 2026, Insurance Journal reported that a major insurer in Florida was facing allegations of “doctoring” or altering field adjuster reports after Hurricane Ian. These allegations come in the form of a lawsuit filed by two homeowners who had previously appeared on a segment of 60 Minutes. These homeowners are now trying to force the Department of Financial Services to hand over information that pertains to the allegations.

This story began in September of 2022, when Hurricane Ian ravaged Florida communities and left many homeowners with excessive damage. The two aforementioned homeowners claim that their insurer altered their field adjuster’s report and reduced the damages. They kept the adjuster’s name on the report and used it to justify a 93% reduction in compensable damages.

In response, the insurer admitted the mistake but claimed that they only failed to include the names of desk adjusters involved in the claims process. In other words, the company argued that the desk adjusters had made these alterations in a normal, legal way.

Not only were the homeowners unhappy with this, but the adjuster also held the insurer responsible for the mistake. Remember, adjusters are supposed to be unbiased, and they must also follow strict ethical codes of conduct.

The story became even more suspicious as time went on. The adjuster claimed that he was fired after raising questions about “unusual activities” carried out by the insurer. This adjuster obviously took his job seriously and was committed to providing accurate reports. When he noticed that his reports were being adjusted behind his back, he was understandably frustrated.

In response to these allegations, various insurance organizations are trying to suppress certain records, arguing that their “trade secrets” should not be revealed to the public. In the face of all this, it is important to remember that the homeowners’ residence was completely unlivable. Its roof was damaged, and the home became damp and moldy with no running water. With no help from their insurer, the couple was forced to sell the property and move on.
