How Is Property Insurance Different for Those Who Own Mobile Homes in Florida?

MobileHomeDamage

Mobile homes (also known as manufactured homes) are fairly popular in Fort Lauderdale due to their affordability and low maintenance needs. Fort Lauderdale is home to many vibrant communities filled with mobile homes owned by people of all walks of life. One key thing to remember is that mobile home insurance is slightly different from normal home insurance. If you’re having any issues as a mobile home owner, consider contacting a Fort Lauderdale property insurance lawyer.

The Mobile Home Insurance Market Is Not Recovering as Quickly in Florida

While lawmakers are running victory laps over the recovery of the Florida housing insurance industry, many people forget that mobile homes have not shared in this success. In April of 2026, Insurance Journal reported that American Mobile Insurance Exchange was still being supervised by insurance regulators in Florida. This insurer started canceling policies two years ago, and since then, it has remained incredibly expensive and difficult for residents to find proper coverage for their mobile homes.

One insurance representative noted that while it’s possible to find insurance for newer mobile homes, coverage for older mobile homes remains difficult to find. Even a seven-year-old mobile home is more expensive to insure compared to a new mobile home with better wind-resistant construction. Average mobile home insurance is now about $5,000 per year.

The only upside is the ease with which many mobile home owners have been able to raise their residences higher above flood levels. Lifting up these homes on elevated platforms is an obvious way to deal with the threat of floods, but it still doesn’t address the threat of wind. In fact, raising up a mobile home may make it more vulnerable to wind damage.

The most difficult part of this story is the fact that many people are moving into mobile homes in an effort to downsize. Some are probably being forced to move out of their detached homes because of rising premiums. Unless you are willing to rent, it seems as though high premiums and inaccessible insurance are not things you can easily escape in Florida.

Another problem is that mobile home parks are some of the hardest hit when major hurricanes occur. Those built before 1994 have very weak wind protection. Hurricane Ian tore through many mobile home parks in 2022, although NPR noted that the most vulnerable homes were actually “slab-built club houses.”
