Are You Ready for the Hurricane Season in Fort Lauderdale?

HurricaneSeason

Hurricane season is only a few weeks away in Fort Lauderdale, and many responsible homeowners are already making preparations. Even if you don’t own your own home, you can still stay safe by following a few relatively easy steps. If you’re concerned about documenting future hurricane damage, consider speaking with a Fort Lauderdale property insurance lawyer.

Before and After Photos Are Key

In April of 2026, the Tallahassee Democrat highlighted the importance of “before-and-after” photos in preparation for hurricane season. Now is the time to take “before” photos of your residence. At this point in time, the storm season has yet to take its toll on your property. As a result, you can take photos and show your insurer what your home looked like before the storm hit. This could make it much easier to file a valid claim and recover compensation.

Basic Home Preparation Tips

Even though hurricane season is still relatively far away, there are a few tips you can start considering as you prepare your home for the storms ahead. One obvious step is to gather the necessary supplies to board up your windows if needed. You might also want to get together some supplies to make sandbags if necessary. Another obvious tip is to secure your patio furniture by tying it to something solid.

Familiarize Yourself With Your Policy

You might also want to take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with your home insurance policy. Check what your policy covers and what it doesn’t cover. Pay close attention to the section that talks about “exclusions.” Another obvious thing you can do with your policy is make sure it’s properly secured. Put it in a box or compartment that will stand up to the worst Mother Nature can throw at it. While you’re at it, put your Will, deeds, and any other important documents into the box as well.

Create an Emergency Kit

The Palm Beach Post also recommends creating an emergency hurricane kit, and this step applies to all Floridians (including those who don’t own properties). Each family should really have their own emergency kit. This kit should contain contact information and any important phone numbers you need to save. You might also collect your important documents, such as Wills or birth certificates.

A good rule of thumb is to put aside a week’s worth of food and water. You also need a flashlight, a radio, a first aid kit, and some way to start a fire.
