Report Compares Florida Home Insurance to a “Coin Toss”

CoinToss

Although many people believe that home insurance is a guaranteed safety net, a new report equates the protection offered by most policies to a coin toss. These reports base this assertion on the fact that almost 50 percent of all home insurance claims lead to zero compensation in the United States. If you’re having trouble pursuing compensation through your home insurance policy, consider speaking with a property insurance lawyer in Fort Lauderdale.

Zero-Payout Claims Rise to 44 Percent in the United States

According to a report published by the Wall Street Journal in May of 2026, claims are more likely than ever to result in zero compensation for homeowners in the United States. 10 years ago, 36 percent of claims resulted in zero compensation for claimants. Now, that number has risen to 44 percent. Based on these statistics, observers are now comparing the reliability of a home insurance policy to a coin toss.

Why Are Insurers Denying So Many Claims?

Observers believe that insurers are denying more claims in an attempt to recoup some of the losses suffered during the post-pandemic years. Another issue is the fact that insurers are raising deductibles, and some policyholders are intentionally selecting higher deductibles in an effort to save on premiums. However, these higher deductibles can cause serious issues when policyholders lack the required funds to file claims.

Of course, some of these denials are completely unjustified. Many Floridians have experienced this firsthand as their insurers deny perfectly valid claims. Some insurers have downplayed roof damage, for example. If an insurer pushes the estimated damage below the deductible (which has never been easier thanks to higher deductibles), they can effectively walk away without paying a cent.

Insurers Push Back Against New Report

Insurance company representatives have pushed back against some of the claims made by the Wall Street Journal. A representative of one company (whose unpaid claims recently rose above 50 percent), says that the report lacks context. This individual claims that losses below deductibles should count toward the total number of unpaid claims. He also argued that some denied claims are later reopened and paid out by insurers.

Florida Has the Highest Rate of Zero-Payout Claims

Unsurprisingly, Florida has the highest rate of zero-payout claims in the country. This is thanks to various factors, including Citizens’ 99 percent success rate when fighting claims during mandatory arbitration. However, private insurers are also willing to vigorously contest most claims in a calculated attempt to generate as much money as possible.
