Florida Midterms: Can Homeowners Vote Their Way Out of an Insurance Crisis?

HomeInsurance

On July 13th, 2026, WPTV reported that a new survey had highlighted a critical issue for most Florida voters for the midterms: Property insurance. Homeowners are heading to the polls in the hopes of prompting real change, and 65 percent of all respondents say that rising insurance costs make them more likely to vote than ever. Which Midterm Candidates Are Promising to Reduce Property Insurance Costs?

Virtually all serious candidates for the Florida midterm elections understand that property insurance is a central issue for voters. As a result, each one has a slightly different plan to make property insurance more affordable for homeowners.

Governor DeSantis is highlighting the work he and his administration have already completed to stabilize the property insurance market through one of the most difficult times in the history of the state. Rate reductions in the state-run insurer of last resort, Citizens, is a key feature of the incumbent’s campaign.

Other Republican candidates promote a free market approach, encouraging more competition in the insurance market to drive costs down for ordinary policyholders. These candidates plan to attract even more insurers to the Sunshine State to increase competition and lower prices.

Paul Renner plans to target fraudulent lawsuits while decreasing property taxes and proving more funding for storm-proofing homes. The goal is to reduce property insurance premiums by up to 20 percent.

The Democratic candidate David Jolly wants to increase government involvement in the property insurance industry with a state-run insurance scheme that covers all natural disaster losses. Private insurers would no longer have the option to provide policies for natural disasters under this plan. Jolly believes this will reduce premiums by over 50 percent.

The Limits of Government Intervention

While the government has many tools at its disposal to affect the property insurance industry, its influence is finite. Perhaps most obviously, the government cannot control the weather, and a single storm could wreck the insurance industry regardless of who is in charge.

People often forget that the home insurance industry is completely global. Risk assessment depends on what is happening in other parts of the globe. A wildfire in Australia can affect your rates here in Fort Lauderdale. There is nothing the Florida government can do to control these global disasters. The Florida government also has no control over national and global inflationary pressures, which drive up construction costs and insurance rates.
